The Courage of BIG Ideas! Take Courage in 2024

A new year means new resolutions, new goals, and new ideas. And it takes courage to try new things!  In Courage of Big Ideas, Cap’n Ben and Pickles explore different scenarios where people had courage throughout history – from sailing around the earth and discovering it was round  to Thomas Edison inventing the lightbulb after 1,000 tries! Talk about determination!

In our script discussions with the Child Development Institute, building courage in youth became an integral concept we wanted to tap into for this episode. In learning more about the modern child’s anxiety challenges, we were compelled to create a space of encouragement and share stories that would inspire your children (and you!) to, “dare to dream – have courage mates!” It’s important to remember that not every idea that we try is going to work out. We will get some answers wrong, and that’s ok!  When things aren’t working, we can keep trying or take a break and move on to something new.

Cap’n Ben says, “Courage is being able to do something even though it might be very difficult or scary for some people.” Trying new things can oftentimes be challenging and scary. However, when we are ready and prepared to meet challenges that may come our way, we are better able to face them and not give up because of them!  We hope that seeing people be bold with BIG ideas might help mateys be willing to raise their hands and participate in class discussions, try something that seems a little outlandish, or stick with something that doesn’t work at first and give it a bigger try. This episode challenges viewers to dream big, act on those ideas, and have courage!

In this episode, various object lessons have been incorporated to help visualize now familiar concepts that were groundbreaking once upon a time (plus they make the learning more fun!!). As Cap’n Ben tells the story of how people once thought that the world was flat, he flattens a globe into a “pancake” flat map. Then, he folds the map together and reinflates it to a round globe as he shares with us that some brave explorers dared to sail around the world to discover it was indeed round.

Many examples of world changers are given to show that a small idea can make a BIG difference. From the invention of the lightbulb, all the way to the first-ever airplane, these stories serve as great examples for kids to dare to dream big and exercise their creativity and goals. As Cap’n Ben says, “What might seem like a strange idea today, can be perfectly normal tomorrow!”

We hope you’ll take some enCOURAGEment from this episode. Whether you’re young or old, there has never been a better time to believe in your ideas and dream big!
